Day Trip to Trichy from Madurai



Trichy is a small historical town in the state of Tamil Nadu India, situated on the banks of Kaveri. The major attractions of Trichy are Rockfort, the Ranganathaswamy temple at Srirangam and Jambukeswarar temple at Thiruvanaikaval. Trichy is formerly known as Tiruchirapalli gets its name from three –headed Aura Tirusiras, who was granted a boon by Lord Shiva here. The city had been under several Empires and dynasties such as Cholas, Pandyas, and Pallavas to British. Trichy is gettable by road from Madurai in 3 hours drive. The Rock fort Temple,Trichy



Trichy is a town of historical significance and famous for its rockfort in the heart of the city that rises to the highs of 273 feet, the Uchi Pillayar Temple can be climbed by a flight of 420 steps carved out of the rock. The Rock Fort as the rocky outcrop is believed at an age of over 3.8 billion years. There are Two Vinayaka Temples at the foot and the top of the rock respectively and a Temple for Siva in between. Lord Siva is known as THAYUMANAVAR. It means the God who turned Mother.

There is a magnificent view of surrounding after reaching at the top. It is basically a complex where you can visit 3 temples built in different eras over the course of time such as Manikka Vinayakar temple at the foot of the hill, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, at the top of the hill the Ucchi Pillayar temple and the Taayumaanavar Koyil Shivastalam, a rock cut temple dedicated to Taayumaanavar, a Nayak era saint. On your way to the Ucchi Pillayar Temple, you can visit at Mathrubutheswarar, dedicated to Lord Shiva, that has a lingam, a projection of the rock itself.

Sri Ranganatha Temple, Srirangam



It is one of the most significant Vaishnava temples in South India, dedicated to Hindu God Ranganatha, a reclining form of Hindu deity, Vishnu in Srirangam, Trichy. It is believed that the shrine emerged from the ocean (parkadal). Located on an Island in Caverry River, constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture is one of the illustrious temples of Lord Vishnu in India. Devotees flocked here in large number round the years especially during the 21 days annual festival in the month of December - January. The prime attractions of temple include the main entrance called as Rajagopuram rises from the base area of around 5720 sq ft and goes up to 237 feet. It is probably one of the largest temples in India due to its size that occupies an area of 156 acres with perimeter of 4116 m.

The Jambukeshwarar Temple, Thiruvannaikaval



A famous Shiva temple in Trichy often referred as Thiruvanaikaval or Thiruvanaikal Jambekeswaram located in the Srirangam Island built by Cholas around 1800 years ago. It is amongst the five holy temples of Lord Shiva in Tamilnadu. There is an underground water stream in the sanctum of Jambukeswara and represents an element o water. Inscription from Cholas period on the walls of temples can be seen here also.

According to the legends, it is named after an elephant - worshipper of Lord Shiva that obtained Moksha here. A Pancha Bhoota Sthala (Lingams representing five elements), it is believed that the Lingam here was made by Parvati out of water particles. The water from which the Lingam was made can still be seen around the Lingam here.
